Second half of the 20th century.

Tilgmans Keramik was a ceramic workshop located outside Gothenburg, active from approximately 1948 to 1975. It was founded and led by Paul Harald Tilgmann (1904–1974). The workshop is best known for its ceramics decorated using the sgraffito technique, as well as for its distinctive animal figures.

Tilgmann moved from Helsinki to Gothenburg in 1945 and established the workshop in Utbynäs in 1948. In 1953, the Polish refugee Marian Zawadzki introduced the sgraffito technique, which subsequently became the workshop’s defining characteristic.

The business relocated to Kortedala in 1957 and reached its peak during the 1960s, when it employed approximately 80 people. Production declined in the early 1970s, and in 1971 operations were moved to Ireland. The workshop closed shortly after Tilgmann’s death in 1974.
